Booms and crashes rang through the air, followed by yelps and squeals.

“Oh, Miss Lunette, you don’t understand! I’m your number one fan! I just wanted to meet with you privately and ask for an autograph and a few pictures. Maybe a hug and a few pumps of your signature perfume. Perhaps a lock of your hair.”

The trailer door banged open and out stumbled Beatrice Batts clutching a Blonde Preference VHS tape to her chest.

My breath hitched as I took in her attire.

She was dressed exactly like Lavender, who dressed exactly like Pepper. Like the nineteen-fifties had never ended. But from the expensive-looking beads on her silk gown and the luxurious shine of her newly dyed blonde tresses, I got the feeling Beatrice had either slipped into Lavender’s gown, or she’d bought it herself. Perhaps with a conveniently timed life insurance check?

“Meet with me? Or become me?” Lavender asked, appearing in the threshold. “Hunny, you’d need a lot more than box dye, a plastic corset, and a knock-off dress to accomplish that.”

Beatrice gasped, her hand flying to her chest where I noted her lavender nails and a huge diamond ring that caught too much light to be fake. It was an exact replica of Lavender’s that clung to her boney finger as she gripped the trailer’s door handle.

“So, that isn’t your dress?” The words escaped my lips before I could stop them.

Lavender turned to me, her expression going from surprised to insulted. “As If I could ever fill a size eight.”

“In shoes, you mean?” Beatrice gawked. “And this isn’t boxed dye. I’ll have you know I went to Rodrigo, your old hairstylist, who used the same color on me.”

Lavender raised her chin. “He would never. I’ve paid him to take that combination to the grave.”

“Platinum, a smudge of golden, and a few drops of ash?”

Lavender’s jaw dropped.

“It looks beautiful,” I intervened, (and expensive). “I wanted to see Rodrigo myself, but I was told he was booked for months!”

Beatrice patted her curls. “Everyone has their price.”

Hmm. Was this the same Beatrice that always begged Chewy for the restaurant's used cooking oil every other night?

“And your dress,” I went on. “It must have cost a fortune. Are those glass beads?”

“Loretta doesn’t use anything else,” Beatrice said, running her hands down her sides.

Lavender gasped. “Loretta, my dressmaker designed that dress for you? Does anyone have loyalty in this town?”

“I did, until you showed me your true colors. What was I thinking, admiring your work? I should’ve stuck with my first favorite. Pepper.” Beatrice nodded over my shoulder, and I turned to see Pepper standing as still as a statue behind me, her eyes trained on Lavender.

Had she heard the scream? Or had she come to confront her nemesis?

Lavender snorted. “I see your bad taste isn’t just in fashion then.”

Excuse me?

“Ugh! Why did you even come back to Windy Willows if you don’t care about your fans? You should’ve stayed wherever you were at. We already have a local celebrity.”

“And you should’ve stayed in jail. Where you belong for trespassing and stalking.
